| When grandson Mitch came
seeking ideas for a school project, it was no accident that the display case for his
trophies took the form of half of a strip built canoe. I've been designing and building strip-built small craft for thirty years. My first boat, built when I was in the fifth grade, was nothing more than box - a piece of found plywood with 1X6 sides. It never did make it out of the basement of the family home. |
The nearest water was a North Dakota duck pond, and my parents were at a loss to figure out why their oldest was so enamored with boats. They didn't know about the book by Howard I. Chapelle found that spring in the local library, a book renewed over and over until the witch who stamped the card said an adult was looking for it.
So I blame Chapelle and American Small Sailing Craft for a lifetime of dreaming about boats.
| This site is about Strip-Built Watercraft Building, which just one of many methods to construct your own small craft. |
| Most of the strip-built craft constructed today are canoes or kayaks and are often called "strippers." |
| There are any number of craftsmen/boat builders who would be pleased to make a stripper for you. It will cost in the neighborhood of $3,000 for a well done hull. That is a lot of money. But building a stripper takes a lot longer than popping fiberglass out of a mold. So if want a stripper, but for some reason don't want to do it yourself, and have the bucks, you may have one of these beauties built for you. |
| Want to do it yourself? Good
for you. Few things bring more pleasure than building a beautiful boat. And of course
you'll save money. Material costs for a stripper are in the range of $350 to $400. This site contains a Builders Manual written by the same guy who giving away his Canoe Plans to anyone willing to learn some basic Lofting skills. There are a bunch digital Resources just a click away. Learn the art of building Small Strippers. And if you simply must spend money, there are a few Small Craft Plans you can't get anywhere else at any price, that really don't cost very much, and there are some great Books to buy. |
