Moments of sadness for an ending Summer are intermixed with an under current of excitement for what is to come.

Ferns began going brown the second week of August on the forest floor around  Sailor's Solace Cottages as an early Fall began falling all around.

Days later a solitary maple branch lost green for orange. Sunrise later. Twilight earlier.

Up on the hill south of town Big Top Chatauqua brings their 20th season to an end with Keeper of the Light, the BoDeans, Riders in the Sky, Showpants, the Oak Ridge Boys, and Old Last Night.

The 44th Annual Apple Festival arrives October 7 - 9.

And out on Lake Superior the 10th Annual Apostle Islands Lighthouse Celebration offers cruises not available any other time of the year.

On Sept. 2, 1905 a Lake Superior northeaster, the most dreaded of Superior storms, hit the Apostle Islands claiming scores of lives and four ships, including the Sevona & Pretoria.

On Friday, Sept 2, a special cruise will depart at 1:30 p.m. to visit the two shipwreck sites. On board will be guest speakers and special presentations.

End your day with the last performance of the year of Keeper of the Light at the Big Top!
