In the space of 24 hours in late May, two events mark a change of seasons, a more intensive  tempo of activities, for many who live and play here by the Sweetwater Sea called Lake Superior, and a few months made priceless by their brevity.

The schooner Huloa moves slowly from its winter cradle to the marina crane,  is hoisted, then let down with great care, its keel gently kissing Superior, joining hundreds of its kind who will be at play on the finest cruising water of all the Great Lakes until October.

Up on the ski hill, there is an oval of white gravel spotted with a few shapeless lumps of canvas one day, but by noon of the following day a place of unique entertainment has sprouted, as the blue and grey of the tent rises to announce another season of music.

At this time of year writing newsletters seems far less important than a wealth of other things . . .

Sailor's Solace Cottages

Strange ideas occur when the owners of lodging sit down to plan a new season.

"We have a pizza maker in each cottage, why don't we give our guests a free pizza as a welcome gift for any time they want to use it?"

Sounded like a good idea!

"How about we give special discounts to returning guests?"

Great idea. So great that it became a full blown discount program we call "Sailor's Solace Savings."

So before you sleep anywhere else on your next Bayfield vacation, check out how "Sailor's Solace Savings" means both quality lodging, and more bucks to spend elsewhere.

The Middle of It All

June? All gone.

July? Memory now.

August & September then.

And maybe most of October - when the colors are rampant on the hillsides, and the lake is a blue gemstone.

Been out for a cruise on the Big Lake yet?

How many Big Top Chautauqua shows enjoyed?

Walked a Superior beach?

People watched on the streets of Bayfield?

Pretended to be a Keeper of the Light on the towers at Michigan Island or Sand Island?

Done absolutely nothing in a beautiful, quiet place?

"I wish we had" is a sad phrase to say - to hear.

"Glad we did Bayfield" is the opposite.

Apostle Islands Cruise Service

Sailor's Solace
Activity Discount

There are so many options to explore the Apostle Islands and Chequamegon Bay - things to do and things to see - that many guests quickly decide that a return visit to Bayfield must be added to their wish lists.

There are daily shuttle departures offering the opportunity to hike and explore Stockton Island, most visited of the Apostles for several excellent reasons, OR the two lighthouses on Michigan Island, least visited of the Apostles because this is the first season shuttle service has been offered there.

Departures aboard the Island Princess offer  morning, afternoon and evening  narrated voyages through the Islands.

Expect a close view of the restoration progress of Raspberry Island Lighthouse and countless photo opportunities - including the Devils Island sea caves.

Just once a week, on Friday evenings, the Lighthouses & Sea Caves Cruise heads to the western edge of the Apostles, passing the Lights at Raspberry and Sand Islands to offer close views of the Sea Caves at Mawikwe Bay.

Lighthouse Celebration

The 11th Annual celebration of the eight lighthouses that flash in the Apostle Islands area
is set for September 6-27, 2006.

A few words to the wise.

If you are into the lighthouse thing, you will want to be here.

And if you are coming to Bayfield for the lighthouses it is real smart to make your lodging and cruise reservations early.

Because September is a wonderful time to visit Bayfield!
