Winter in Bayfield
seemed never-ending.
The last snow storm
of the season came in mid April.
And there were more
than a few four letter words uttered by residents to welcome the event!
The ferry to
Madeline Island remained ice bound for months rather than a few weeks.
It was the longest
ice cave visiting season in memory.
Spring boat work is
more than a month later than normal.
But then the slow
melt started.
One evening the
bears robbed the bird feeders, and in the morning there were flowers to
photo, and one could be confident that Spring had sprung.
E. B. White wrote "I
would feel more optimistic about a bright future for man if he spent
less time proving that he can outwit Nature and more time tasting her
sweetness and respecting her seniority." |
