The Innkeepers of
Sailor's Solace Cottagessat themselves down
in the two comfortable chairs of the upper unit one afternoon in January
to consider what changes were needed in cottages that were now
four years old.
Comments in the
guest book yielded no insight at all.
All our guests have
been uncritical by nature, willing to appreciate things as they were and
not as they could, or should be.
Not being as kind
to ourselves as our guests have been, we noted that there were a few
dings in the paint, so decided color changes were required. The Bluenose
Cottage is now a restful green called Rock Moss. The Huloa Cottage now a
peaceful blue called Pearl Lake.
We've never been
fond of the old style window shades, the only thing good about them
being low price. New pleated window shades are the replacements in both
units.
And something
needed being done with an ancient entertainment tool called the VCR. So
we added a DVD player to the shelves in the TV cabinet.
All creatures pursue food in one
way or another to sustain life, and often gather in groups to do so.
Now there is no easier way to go
out on a fragile limb than to start listing ones favorite places to "eat
out" in the Bayfield area. But it needs being done for eight
reasons.
5.
Ethel's at 250. Wonderful old building skillfully restored. Great pizza.
6.
Greunke's for hearty food, funky ambience, and their traditional fish
boil.
7.
Pier Plaza for the view from their deck of the waterfront.
None of the above offer a quiet
meal. Below is our choice.
8. Portside Bar & Restaurant is
in the Port Superior Marina complex just a bit south of Bayfield.
Located on the second floor, it offers for your viewing pleasure docks
full boats (mostly sail) and in the distance Madeline Island. And you
can walk off that meal with a stroll of the docks. Of course
the vitals are wonderful too!
We've noted our guests at
Sailor's Solace Cottages are
contrary enough to bring their own bagels, brew a pot of coffee and start
their day quietly on their private deck. They buy a couple steaks, cook
them on the gas grill - enjoy a quiet meal with their significant other.
Or they simply take that free pizza we supply out of the freezer.
Eating out seldom includes
solitude or leisure.
Chances are that solitude and leisure are a couple of the reasons you
chose to vacation here.
Which is why "solace" is a part
of our name.
Beaches and Swimming
Yes, Lake Superior is quite cool -
to be honest call it chilling.
But from July through early
September the swimming is wonderful
from the wide shallow water beaches of Superior's South Shore.
Our beaches are bigger this year
too. With water levels about 20 inches lower than last fall, expect to
see beaches not seen since the historic lows of the
1920's.
We'll be pleased to tell you how to get to those beaches too!
Boat Work Season
May has finally arrived, and with it plans & dreams & intense
anticipation of another
precious sailing season near the Apostle Islands.
Boat launching has begun. An exiting time
indeed.
For owners of
fiberglass craft, pre launch "boat work" is little more than a quick
polish. But to this owner of a near 70 year old wood schooner "boat
work" this season means new cabin sides, a new gaff spar for the main
sail, and gallons of extremely pricy varnish.
Why do some of us
spend all those bucks on a floating thing of fiberglass or wood? What
urge causes sailors to sail? Especially here, on this huge cold lake?
Why do sailors sail?
Charles Kuralt wrote this about sailing:
"This is one of the loveliest moments of life:
the moment after you have shut down
the engine of a sailing boat.
The sudden silence always comes as a sweet surprise.
You let the bow fall off the wind, feel the sails fill,
feel the boat heel gently for the instant it takes the craft
to recognize its new mysterious power, then feel it surge forward, lines
taunt, bow rising, sails pulling, gathering momentum now, doing its
business, in control, on course."
One "must do" trip this season is the
Raspberry Island Keeper's Tour that includes two hours on Raspberry
Island and a
guided visit into the living quarters and to the top of
the newly restored tower.
By the way,
if you really want to be among the first to be notified when a new show
is booked, make a $100.00 donation to the BTC. You will feel good for
doing so.
And receiving email notification
early yields a "I'm special" feeling.
From Yonder
Mountain String Band to Riding The Wind,
Willie Nelson to Wild
Woods and Waters, The Kingston Trio
to Keeper Of The Light,
The Smothers Brothers to On
The Velvet, and even Garrison Keillor
- the 2007 schedule offers an outstanding variety of entertainment.
While you are on the Big Top site,

Volunteer Opportunities page. BTC Volunteers are really a very
special group of people.
