Ask any Bayfield resident what her favorite wildflower is and the answer will always be lupines.

In mid April I began walking the snow-free grounds of Sailor's Solace, head down, looking for just one thing - lupine shoots.

Four years of harvesting and planting lupine seeds are paying off.

As this is written the plants are 10 inches high, and have spread very well.

So come mid June, the multiple colors of lupine will be seen everywhere.

What a super time to visit & live in Bayfield!

At The Big Blue Tent -
"Keeper of the Light"

The neat thing about compiling & writing a monthly E-Newsletter is the freedom to be opinionated without instant disagreement!

In my opinion: "Riding the Wind" and "Keeper of the Light" are the Big Tops' two "must see shows."

The most talented story tellers, singers & actors in the area are here to entertain and inspire in ways you will not find anywhere else.

Music that sets toes taping & hands clapping. Haunting tales. Tear inspiring stories.

The history of the Apostle Islands, and the people who survived here - and didn't.

"Keeper of the Light" returns this season for just two shows, July 13 & September 2.

I'll be there! Will you?

Stockton Island

Second only to Madeline Island in size, Stockton Island is the most popular
to visitors of the Apostle Islands.

Over seven miles long by almost three miles wide, with twenty-three
miles of shoreline, one would think there would be plenty of room for all.

And there is, though at times it can feel a little close at the Presque Isle Dock.

Sea Kayaking

Twenty years ago one didn't see all that many sea kayaks
while sailing the Apostles.

Not any more.

Kayaks in every color of plastic and handcrafted wood.

Singles. Doubles. Sit in and sit on.

And they travel widely among the Islands.

On the weekend of June 16 the Inland Sea Society will host the
largest sea kayak symposium on Lake Superior just twelve
miles from Bayfield in Washburn.

For Lake Superior kayakers - and those who want to be
kayakers - it is the place to be.

Not my thing. But it sure looks like fun!

Living Adventure

Bayfield Maritime Museum

Two years ago, on a showery afternoon, I took two grandchildren
to the Bayfield Maritime Museum, paid the reasonable fees,
and made myself a hero - for the afternoon, at least.

It is a fact that grandfathers don't always pick the proper thing to do
with the kids. But that visit was the right thing for all of us.

Bayfield's maritime heritage stretches back 150 years.

None of it is boring. All of it is relevant.

The kids were spellbound by the hands on exhibits.

And one somewhat jaded adult got a wonderful education.

My advice? Go to the Bayfield Maritime Museum.

Just don't wait for a showery afternoon.

s Chequamegon Bay Marinas

In this bay can be found largest number of sailing vessels on
Lake Superior.

And the largest number of charter sailing vessels
on all of the Great Lakes.

And why not?

The Apostle Islands are among the 10 best sailing
destinations in the country.

To the right are links to two of the marinas that house and
service the sailing fleet.

May is a very busy time in the marinas as all those hundreds of
boats are moved from dry land to water.

Launching season. Splash time.

And a great spectator event!
