| On a blustery
March morning, a fresh couple inches of "lake effect" whitened the driveway
and big flakes rushed past the window headed east. The word on the street -
and the weather channel - was that we were in the path of a major
tail-end-of-winter storm. But down at the post office one old timer was unfazed. "It's winter. This is Bayfield. What do you expect? Besides, a good storm gives us something to brag about." The threat never became reality. All traces of snow are gone. And the blooming season can't come soon enough! |

Apostle Islands Cruise Service |
| s It was a long winter for the Island Princess too. But on May 14 lay-up season ends, and cruises begin again with the "Morning Grand Tour." We tell guests at Sailor's Solace there are two things they must do to appreciate the area. First: get out on Lake Superior and see the Apostle Islands up close. More about "second" later. There is simply no better
introduction to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore than a narrated
cruise on the Island Princess. |

| The Grand Tour starts at 10 AM
and for three hours weaves its way through the heart of the Apostles.
Past the lighthouses on Raspberry Island & Devils Island, close to the Sea Caves on Devils - as far north as one can go in Wisconsin. History. Geology. Legends. Lore. And the always scenic 22 Apostle Islands. All aboard the Island Princess! |

Riding The Wind |
||||||
| The second "must
do" is to be entertained by an evening at the Big Top. Some go for the big name performers. Garrison Keillor. Tommy Emmanuel. Arlo Guthrie. Nitty Gritty Dirt Band Give me the House Shows. "Riding the Wind." "Keeper of the Light." "30th Star." "River Pants." "Best of the Big Top." Especially "Riding the Wind." From the other-worldly opening notes to the closing song, the music vibrates in the soul, rolling the air like a night breeze through a pine forest From the first words, - "old winds are about tonight," to "my father was killed in the Roy's Point Mill," to "I decided then to live, and die in Bayfield. It was the most beautiful place I had ever seen" - and all the lyric poetry in between, time and place are suspended. Experience "Riding the Wind." Then buy the CD! |

Michigan Island Lighthouses |
|||
Michigan Island and its two lighthouses will receive considerably more attention this season. With the Raspberry lighthouse closed for exterior and interior renovation, the Apostle Islands Cruise Service will be making trips to Michigan Island from July 1 to September 6. Upon landing (weather permitting) visitors will have 110 steps to climb from the dock. A Park Interpreter will be nearby as visitors walk the grounds and explore the towers. For

I Hate Lighthouses! |
All who read this live a life of relative ease when contrasted with the life style of people 100 years ago. When we read of the harsh, lonely existence of the lighthouse keepers wife, all the romantic notions we might have of living in a lighthouse are blown away. In the two links that follow, the female view of what it was to be the wife of a lighthouse keeper become clear. It was seldom all that romantic. And often it was downright dangerous. |

| s Apostle Islands Lighthouse Celebration | |||
| The 10th Annual celebration of
the nine lighthouses that flash in the Apostle Islands area is set for
September 7-28, 2005. A few words to the wise. If you are into the lighthouse thing, you will want to be here. And if you are coming to Bayfield for the lighthouses it is real smart to make your lodging and cruise reservations early. Because September is a wonderful time to visit Bayfield! |
