Bayfield!

A Newsletter From Bayfield , WI

space
February in Bayfield, WI 2005 brought the unexpected and a notable lack of the expected.

Who would have thunk it?

A full week of late March weather the first week of February. Day temps in the low 50s. Nights with the sound of dripping water from the roof.

And the sighting of a rake left out too late in the fall, a week before invisible under snow shoveled high, now a reminder of fall chores left undone.

Up on the orchard hills, apple trees were being pruned, an annual normal sight - except the farmers wore long sleeves and a vest instead of a parka.

A pruning tip for apple trees: remove any branches going straight up, and those that overlap and shade lower branches.

The expected didn't arrive this February.

Wind Sled 1954

s
Oh, we kept getting snow - one sure thing here. And the temps returned to the normal winter range.

But the wind sled ran longer, and the ice road was on-again, off-again.

And it was never safe to visit the sea caves, a magical place to venture to in more normal January/February weather.

But there were still all the outdoor activities, including the ever-growing Book Across The Bay.

And it was a great time to visit Bayfield for
a relaxing, romantic weekend in the suites at
Sailors' Solace Cottages.

County Highway H (ice road)

s
There is a strange time when neither ferry boats nor cars can cross the lake to Madeline Island.

This is the time when the ice is thick enough to support a person on skis, snowshoes, or even a snow machine (city folks call them snowmobiles), but not sturdy enough to support a pickup truck laden with builder's tools. At this time of early ice, the infamous wind sled makes its annual appearance.

The wind sled—an open 24-foot boat with skids on the bottom and an airplane engine in back offers a trip which lasts less than five minutes each way.

Sailing the Apostle Islands

s
Our infatuation with the Apostle Islands is just under 20 years old.

We came here for the sailing.

Took early retirement here because we could not conceive a better place to live out our years.

But it remains still about the sailing. You could sail this small portion of Lake Superior called the Apostle Islands for two lifetimes and still not know her well.

Nevertheless, you are now invited to take an on-line cruise aboard my old schooner. I'll share what little I do know about these islands, in the hope a few will catch the same bug that infects every sailor on these seas.
