Bayfield! |
A Newsletter From Bayfield , WI |
| space | |||
| Bayfield residents have been
moving snow since late November. By January well over three feet of "lake effect" had created a true winter wonderland on the hillsides above a deep blue Lake Superior. But it really wasn't winter in Bayfield yet. Winter really arrived on January 12 when a long straight line of Xmas trees appeared between the ferry landing and Madeline Island. When the ferry made a grinding last run. With the low roar of the wind sled. |
This Newsletter Content Mushing Season |
| Winter in
Bayfield. As Innkeepers one of the most common question we hear from our summer guests is "Do you stay here in the winter?" We answer "sure," and go on to explain that winter is appreciated as the quiet time, when the beauty of snow piled high on each evergreen tree limb is a constant marvel, when the blue of the lake is covered with ice, when things done for recreation switch from sail to ski, from Big Top Chautauqua to equally fine productions at StageNorth. And it is a great

Mushing Season |
| s | |||
| Naming a dog is never an easy
thing. Naming 30 dogs? No thanks! But John & Mary Theil have 30 sled dogs in their mushing business, including Lutefisk, Lefse, Kremkakke, Sondbakkle - and Elvis. John & Mary offer dogsledding trips
for all ages and abilities from their dog kennel 15 miles from Bayfield out into the
remote hilly It's easy for us to recommend Wolfsong Adventures. After several seasons of sending our guests to go mushing with them, not one has returned to their suite unhappy with the experience. There is something very exiting about
being behind a well trained team of dogs who obviously love to do what they do. I asked Mary what were the most common things people said at the end of a mushing trip. Her reply? "This is the most amazing experience I've ever had!" |

Big Top Chautauqua |
| s | |||
| During the summer, new guests
to Bayfield staying at Sailors' Solace Cottages and Island View B&B
are told that there are two "must do" things to do while they are here. One is to get out on Lake Superior. There are many ways to do that. The second is to take in a show at Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqua. We find that many of our returning guests decide on the dates of their stay only after consulting the Big Top schedule. Why? Because it is simply a very special place. The final show of the winter tour schedule for Big Top Chautauqua appears below. If they play near you, go see the show. Just because! Of course it will feel a bit odd to enjoy the fine musicians of the BTC without the big blue tent overhead, but sometimes we must settle for less than the very best. |

Raspberry Island Lighthouse |
| s | |||
| The most popular lighthouse
in the Apostle Islands (attracting over 10,000 visitors each year) is located on Raspberry
Island. Tour boats motor past and stop here, as do private sail and power craft of all descriptions. Over half the visitors come by kayak. Extensive loss of shoreline from years of smashing waves brought the shoreline within 30 to 50 feet of some of the structures, and there was a fear that with the next high water cycle of Lake Superior those structures would be damaged or destroyed. So in 2002 - 2003 a rock wall was constructed at the base of the shoreline in front of the lighthouse, the slope above the wall was restructured, seeded, replanted with native plants, and a drainage system was installed at the top of the slope. 2005 will bring a season of restoration at Raspberry Lighthouse as the main lighthouse building gets repairs to to the foundation, siding, windows and interior. When that work has been accomplished the interior south half of the building will be restored to appear as it did in the early 1900s and the north half will be adapted to provide housing for seasonal employees. The main lighthouse building may be closed at times while restoration is going on. |

| Reality is that many readers
of this newsletter have no intention of visiting Bayfield in the winter - thinking instead of islands where the water doesn't freeze, or a "romantic?" place where the sound of slot machines is always present and showgirls prance, or just "anywhere the snow doesn't fly." |
