Two Bayfield residents share greetings in
the Post Office.

"What are you doing this winter," one asks.

"Getting through it," the other replied.

It hasn't been all that hard - so far - to
get through a winter that turned mild.

Mild meaning that the 30 inches of fluffy
snow at New Year had become a few inches
of icy crust with patches of green grass
for color.

Then, at the end of the day we remember
Martin Luther King, the flakes began to fall, and by morning evergreen branches drooped with the load of 6 fresh inches.

But mild means the chances of driving
the ice road to Madeline, or hiking to the ice caves, are getting more remote with every passing day.

And the lack of bone chilling cold and hip deep snow yields opportunity to daydream a bit - of warmer days on the Big Lake, and Sailing Days.

Bayfield & Lighthouses

Visitors to Bayfield like to buy items
with lighthouses on them to wear, to
take home &  as gifts.

Four newspaper writers from Scandinavia
on the Apostle Islands Cruise Service Water Taxi last Fall are a good example. It would
be interesting to hear the conversations that arise when their sweat shirts are worn back home.

Local artists respond to that demand in
endless varieties art forms.

Boutique Stepping Stones by Nancy
Jerabek, an exclusive at Keeper of the
Light Gift Store are one example.

But their use is not limited to stepping
stones. Frame six as a fireplace hearth.
Or order a custom stone with your favorite schooner on it as a unique end table.

In a considerably lighter medium are the
highly detailed point-by-point lighthouse
cards from Randall Peterson Designs.

Guests at Sailor's Solace Cottages receive
one of these with a hand written "thank
you for staying with us" when they return home.

Virtual Lighthouses

While on the subject of lighthouses, here
are four sites to roam through, each
providing a slightly different viewpoint.

The National Park Service offers details
and descriptions in a site that is deep
with links.

Over at Apostle Islands Cruise Service are outstanding images from people that know these islands very well.

At Chequamegon Bay Web the question
"who needs lighthouses today" is dealt with.

Lastly, from Marvin Aerial Photo, a view very few of us have the opportunity to see personally.

Virtual Cruising

No daydreaming of warmer days  on the
Big Lake is almost complete without doing some virtual sailing.

So how about a cruise through the
Apostle Islands on board the
schooner Huloa?

BTC Shows - First Look

A day of cruising comes to a fitting end
by placing your attentive body in a
Big Blue Tent for some first class entertainment.

These are the first confirmed 2006
shows at Lake Superior Big Top.
