Bear & York Islands

Bear.gif (4860 bytes) One seldom sees many sail boats near either of these islands. Both are a little off to the west of where most sailors sail.

At 835 feet, Bear is the second tallest of the islands. Like on Oak Island, about 200 feet up can be found signs of a very old beach line. No dock is available. The best place to anchor is off the south end sand beach. If conditions are calm, there is another sandy cove on the NE corner.

York Island is low, about a mile long, with a long sandy beach on the north side and a tangle of overgrowth and trees on the south.

Over to the west is the real destination of this portion of our cruise.

We are going to Sand Island, where we will find the most beautiful of the Apostle Lighthouses, and what is left of a fishing community that thrived into the 1940's.
