The Author & His Boat

Happily married for forty something years - to the same lovely woman.
Four children. Eight grandchildren.

The schooner that owns us was built in 1939 - the same year I was born.

Lake Superiors' Apostle Islands have been my summer playground for going on 16 years.

Here she is again on a lazy August day.

It has been said that Huloa is the oldest pleasure sailing boat on Superior. Built in Nova Scotia, she is 36' long not counting that bow sprit, 10' beam, with the tip of the keel 6' below the surface.

Huloa was a basket case when when we bought her.

Click here for the story on how we brought her back to life.

Our 10' dingy is a lovely strip-built craft of my own design, weighing in at 83 pounds.

Designing and building "strippers" is a long time hobby.

There are three schooners sailing the Apostle Islands.

Foe several years, the weekend before Apple Festival, we had a race in conjunction with doing some fund raising for improving the waterfront pavilion.

In this photo, Huloa overtakes the 54' Zeeto as they near the buoy. We really didn't care who won!
